What should you expect?
Cigarette smoking may alter the results of the test, as nicotine can cause arteries in the
extremities to constrict.
Clothing and jewelry must be removed from the extremity that will be tested.
The health care provider should be informed of any medications that the patient is taking,
especially blood pressure and vascular medications that could interfere with
interpretation of results. For the noninvasive extremity arterial evaluation exam a blood pressure cuff is applied to each of the arms and legs and a pressure is recorded foreach extremity cuff.
The pulse is also taken and recorded for each of the extremities.
A Doppler ultrasound may be performed to assess the arteries for the location and the
amount of narrowing. The study takes approximately 60-90 minutes.
